In this rock and mineral resource, there are twenty 28 task cards with short reading passages about the types of rocks, rock cycle and examples of rocks. Integrate science into your literacy block and differentiate for all learners!
Day 1 Task Card Focus: Reading Fluency & Recording Sheet-
My students, especially at the beginning of the year, struggle with transitioning to the more difficult third grade vocabulary. This in turn, can sometimes take a negative toll on their reading fluency. My goal in creating these cards is to have students to become more successful reading content-specific vocabulary words. The increased exposure to these key content words will improve not only their fluency, but comprehension as well. There is a simple recording sheet that asks questions requiring students to refer back to the text. *Lower level version has multiple choice questions based on the fluency task card passage.
Day 2: Language Arts Review
Students will use the same task cards from the prior day to answer language arts questions from the passages on the task cards.
*Lower level version has simplified parts of speech practice where they will write N,V, or A to name the nouns, verbs, or adjectives in the underlined word.
Day 3: Synonyms & Antonyms Practice
Students will use the same task cards from the prior day to identify synonyms and antonyms using context clues from the passages on the task cards.
*Lower level version uses the words opposite in place of antonym and same meaning instead of synonym.
Day 4: Fact and Opinion Station
Students will use the same task cards from the prior day to generate facts and opinions from the passages on the task cards.
*Lower level version has a cut and paste version where they will sort facts and opinions. If students have difficultly with cutting and pasting, they can always write F for fact or O for opinion.
Day 5: Writing Center
Students will choice from 4 writing prompts that address different writing genres. Writing paper is included.
This could be a partner or group activity, independent reading station, or whole group class "scoot". There is an answer sheet for students to record their answers, as well as an answer key.
