Have you ever told your students to "show their strategies" on a reading test and gotten back a stack of tests with neon yellow (they highlighted the entire passage) texts or ABCDEFG....all the way down the side but no evidence of sincere understanding? Kids have all different ideas of what "strategies" mean, some of which are more helpful than others. This 4-step strategy has been extremely effective for ensuring my students succeed on standardized reading tests. I model the four steps and allow them to use their "code" sheet for a couple months with our weekly quizzes before having them use the strategies from memory. There's no room for neon yellow passages, obsessive lettering, or not showing thinking with this bad boy in hand :)!
