INCLUDES: 12 serious Science files
WARNING: NOT cutesy, fluff for notebooks, and NOT tons of pages to copy for each activity! COPY only ONE (1) page per ACTIVITY for each STUDENT:
*Interactive 1 page QuickNOTES graphic organizer frame for the Scientific Method and 1 pg frame for Identifying Variables and Graphing with Dry Mix memory aid. The students will place cards into their correct place onto the graphic organizer pages.
* QuickNOTES presentation for the steps of the Scientific Method in a wheel, and parts of an experiment on cards (which is included as a LAB), to apply to each step, as well as identifying the Variables: Independent, Dependent, and Controlled and using the memory aid Dry Mix to graph them properly. The presentation also has links to fun videos about the Scientific Method. Can be used for Stations, Teacher small group review by placing in a sheet protector and copying on cardstock, or Cooperative Group review. I like to leave the completed Scientific Method wheel on tables with Vocab Match Up Cards for the Unit for student reference.
*WarmUPS(6 slides) to review Scientific Method steps, application in an experiment, and identifying Variables in an experiment and a graph
*2 LABS: Paper Airplane LAB allows students to choose the question to test out of three (3) given, then, make hypothesis, list materials & procedure, collect data, graph it, and draw conclusions. Bouncing Ball LAB also guides teams through the Scientific Method, graphing and identifying Variables, and drawing conclusions.
*Cooperative Group TASK CARDS are included to make group work more effective and easy! I coordinate by placing color stickers on the students chairs and for each LAB, post which COLOR has which JOB (ex. RED Dot = Recorder)
*Scientific Method and Variables Vocab MatchUP CARDS which are my kids favorite activity each week. In table teams, the first team to correctly match the cards-- wins treats and points for Friday Movie lunch with me!
*Scientific Method with Sandy in Bikini Bottom page shows how the Squirrel uses the Scientific Method to determine which way to store her nuts underwater for the Winter-- barnacles? seaweed? shells?
*SHOW ME THE DATA allows students to graph and compare 2 sets of DATA using a Bar Graph and a Line Graph. I suggest using simple reasons they can remember like, "sets of different, not changing numbers" for a Bar Graph and "one thing that changes (increases/decreases) in number" for a Line Graph. This page gives specific directions on how to create each properly and should be helpful for students to reference all year.
*Exit Ticket: Hypothesis- would be great to use during one of the LABS - students can tape up tickets onto a T-chart written on the board-was their Hypothesis correct or incorrect? leading the class into a discussion of whether that matters or not?
*Scientific Method Tri-Fold Sheet for using with any LAB, creates a quick, 3D record of an experiment in the student's journals or interactive notebooks!
*Scientific Method LAB Notebook guides students and parents through the Scientific Method for Science Fair and gives an overview, examples, titles, and NO-NOs.
COPY INSTRUCTIONS: to copy 1pg QuickNOTES for Scientific Method and for Variables, LABS (copy 2 to a pg), WarmUPs (copy 6 to a pg), Graphing, and Experiment pages (1 to a pg)
