This is a 450 slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), challenge questions with answers, many video links, visuals, classwork or homework sheets, hands-on project for building a rocket from plastic soda bottles, launching, and much more.
Note: Also included is my Apollo, Mission to the Moon PowerPoint so please do not purchase both.
This PowerPoint begins describing the space race. Technology from the mid 60's is described and the anatomy of the Saturn V rocket provided. The Apollo 11 spacecraft is then shown and the parts described in a step by step process. The astronauts are introduced and the descent to the moon described. A link to the eagle has landed has your students listen and watch this historic landing. The ascent back to the command module is described. A neat activity has your students recreate the docking of the lunar module and command module. Directions are included. The reentry is described and splash down. A link to Google Moon and research sheet has your students visit all of the Apollo landing sites and gather information. (This can be visited by the teacher on the screen or if you have the technology available student can explore on their own). The PowerPoint concludes with a series of challenge questions. An arrow points to a part of the spacecraft or astronaut and your students say the answer. The next slide reveals the answer and frames another part / astronaut. This is a visually stunning PowerPoint that will engage your students and sets up the Google Moon research well.
The PowerPoint roadmap then begins describing how the students are going to build water rockets that will actually fly and will need to bring in two standard soda bottles (Polar Cola bottles work the best but standard 20, 0z or 2 liter will work) The PowerPoint describes how the soda bottle rocket will have some similarities to regular rockets. The water rockets will have a nozzle, should rotate, will have a nosecone to limit drag and increase aerodynamics. A link to a water rocket building website is provided. The space shuttle program is then highlighted and all of the shuttles described. Links to HD videos of take-off and landing are provided. Shuttle disaster of Columbia and Challenger is addressed. The ISS is introduced. Issac Newton and Laws of Motion are quickly covered and related to rocketry. Thrust, Lift, Drag, and weight and resistance are described. Instructions for how to build the water rocket, parts of the rocket, and link to purchase launcher if you don't have one are provided. Students really enjoy this PowerPoint but love the building and launching the rockets. I have the students create a poster that is presented before launch.
This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be interactive as possible and ask many questions, provides built in review opportunities, explains directions to activities, and much more. Transition effects are never used.
