Product Follows 5th Grade Writing Standard: Production & Distribution of Writing #5 Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
I love to use this in my classroom during the editing portion of the writing process. Students review the feedback that I gave them from past writing assignments in order to identify areas of strength and areas of improvement for themselves as writers. On each card, they identify one of their strengths and write it on the front of the card. They also write a goal that they want to achieve when completing their newest writing prompt.
We display the Rockin’ Writers poster in the classroom, as well as all of their Rockin’ Writer cards. I find it helpful to laminate them before displaying them so we can easily take them down to replace the Rockin’ Writers cards with the new ones and to help preserve them.
One of my favorite things that the students do with this product after displaying the cards is to choose a classmate to peer edit their work. They can specifically choose someone who is “rockin’” at a skill that they’re not as good at. I have them ”apply” for a peer editing partner based on who they think will edit their work best and why they think that.
