Have your students develop their own classification system for a group of sample rocks. The science process skill of classifying is critical for the understanding of later more complicated classification systems. After the lesson, students then write to explain their classification scheme and compare their system to a classification system that a geologist might use. Teacher instructions, scoring rubric, recording page, writing page, and a rock classification concept map, are included in this lesson.
This lesson is included in the book Rising to the Challenge of the National Science Education Standards, also sold on this website. The lesson will also be available in a packet of nine process skill lessons on rocks.
