Rocks Minerals Read Science Aloud Activities - "A Rock Is Lively"
How are rocks and cookies alike? How old are the oldest rocks? How do some animals use rocks? Your students will learn many interesting facts about rocks and minerals as they learn from the story “A Rock Is Lively” by Dianna Hutts Aston.
This set of lesson activities base on the book includes:
•A Notes Form which allows students to jot down important information about rocks and minerals as they listen to the story.
•A Listening Response Form which assesses the students’ understanding of concepts about rocks and minerals.
•A Learning Log where students share what they’ve learned about rocks and minerals and create their own illustration.
•A True or False Color Puzzle to reinforce correct concepts about rocks and minerals.
•A Vocabulary Wordsearch which features key vocabulary words used in the story.
Answer keys are provided for each activity. Kid-friendly graphics have been added to each student page. Thanks to Cosmic Dog Designs for providing many of the graphics used in this bundle.
My primary use of this unit is to build listening comprehension skills while reinforcing science knowledge about rocks and minerals. I encourage my students to take notes while I read the story aloud. They use their notes to help them complete some of the activities.
Read-aloud picture books are a fun way to teach content material. I suggest using the activities in the order listed above.
