This is the first unit in a series of primary independent studies. Each unit is designed to be used by a single student or even groups of students during lessons in which they have already shown mastery, as enrichment options or anchor activities when students have finished their work early, during center time when students may want to pursue their own interests, or other times which students may choose their own activities.
This Rock and Minerals unit was designed for primary students who have an interest in rocks, minerals and fossils and wish to explore this information in greater depth. Each activity offered in this independent study has the option of primary spaced lines, or traditionally spaced lines based on students' ability. The activities are leveled from the basic researching in order to answer open ended questions about rocks and minerals to advanced creations, in which students design a building using stone materials or draw their own piece of unique jewelry using gemstones. This independent study does require students basic reading as well as an interest in the topic, in this case Rocks and Minerals.
When using these studies, students are presented with the opening page and all the options for the independent study unit. Once the options are explained and students have access to appropriate resources, they were to select activities that interested them and work at their own pace based on their interests.
The Rocks and Minerals Independent Study specifically addresses:
What are minerals?
How are minerals used?
What are properties of minerals?
Determining their favorite mineral with an opportunity to research it further.
What are the different types of rocks?
How is each rock type formed?
How can one type of rock be changed into another?
How are fossils created?
How many rocks, minerals and fossils can students name?
Note: All of these units were developed for and used with gifted Kinder/primary students. Although this is the case, these units have been altered to be appropriate for levels up to and including second grade.
