This is a science journal that I use during my unit, "What's the dirt on Rocks, Minerals, Soil and Fossils?"
We use this journal every time we do science and it keeps everyone on track and organized!
Everyday we study a new rock or mineral of the day (quartz, obsidian, granite, etc) and draw a small picture of it.
We do rock centers where we sort rocks and draw pictures of them.
We do a scientific experiment where we use different combinations of dirt, clay and sand to make a plant grow and we document its growth.
We study the three different kinds of rocks and look at the rock cycle.
We look at the life cycle of a fossil.
At the end, there is a CCSS-Aligned Expository Report (Graphic Organizer) for students to complete a report on one of the rocks we studied.
We also complete a Home Project--a Pet Rock project where students find a rock and complete a report on it. If you need this outline too, let me know :)
This unit was done in Second Grade, and aligns to 2nd Grade California Science Standards, but could be adapted to earlier or later grades.
