SEDIMENTARY ROCK IDENTIFICATION ONLY LAB

This is a portion of the posted TPT Sedimentary Rock Tutorial and Identification Lab – this portion focuses on sedimentary rock identification only!

The most common rock type in the world! Learn how to READ the past. Do you want your kids to learn about sedimentary rocks – WELL…THIS IS THE WAY TO DO IT! SEE PREVIEW! This covers it all – a thorough identification LAB on sedimentary rocks examining texture, formation process, mineral composition, distinguishing characteristics, specific examples, and world application.

No lab samples? NO PROBLEM! Combines perfect with lab samples if you have them. The design of the lab allows the teacher lots of flexibility when it comes to what information is provided to students and what information is not.

Content and knowledge delivery is multi-layered and dynamic! In this activity students will:

Differentiate between clastic, chemical, and organic sedimentary rocks

Define key terminology and match corresponding images (rock structure, weathering, erosion, deposition, burial, compaction, lithification, compaction, cementation)

Conceptual breakdown (type, geologic symbol, color, mineral composition, formation environment, and general description) of the following rocks: siltstone, conglomerate, sandstone, limestone – both crystalline and bioclastic, breccia, bituminous coal, rock salt, rock gypsum, and shale

Match sedimentary rocks to their appropriate category of clastic, chemical, or organic

This works well for any level but is GREAT for special education students or college prep learners that need an alternative assessment and may not be great at traditional labs.

This lab has been used in all levels, special education to advanced learners.

This is a thorough and DYNAMIC activity that covers a ton of information about rocks. This has been used as a pre-class, lab/activity, study guide, review, and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.

A guaranteed hit all around!

Cut and paste or Velcro and laminate for special education applications and alternative assessments.

Within the classroom, this activity has been consistently very successful and acclaimed by students in grades 5th – 10th within multiple types of schools - public, private, and charter.

This work has also been shared at workshops, in-services, and conferences.

Great feedback from parents, teachers, administrators, and curriculum field professionals.

Applicable to many state science assessments and benchmarks.

Has been applied to state mandated North Carolina end of year tests for science in grades 5 and 8.

Even used by teachers in New York State as a preparation for the Earth Science Grade 9 Regents Exam.
