Rocks and Minerals- This packet was created to provide hands-on activities for your Rocks and Minerals Unit.
It includes over 10 different standards based activities. These activities are perfect for interactive note booking. Many activities come with a projectable copy to make it easier to complete with the students.
Please note that the teacher will need to provide some text about rocks and minerals to complete these activities. Also, some additional materials will be needed to complete some of the simple experiments and tests.
*Rocks and Minerals Anticipation Guide-Students complete an anticipation guide before and after the unit to activate and assess learning.
*Variety of Vocabulary Activities-This pack includes several different vocabulary activities. Projectable vocabulary cards with real life photographs and the same vocabulary cards are included for posting in the classroom. Students complete a flip flap book using the vocabulary words rock, mineral, texture, luster, and hardness. Students can also create study cards to store in their science notebooks.
*Introduction to Rocks and Minerals Book, Questions, and Graphic Organizer-One page mini book with information about rocks and minerals. Small half sheet with three questions and a half sheet graphic organizer are also included. A full size version of the questions is included for students with handwriting difficulties. A projectable copy of the book and questions are also included.
*How to Use Minerals in Everyday Life-A simple three flap book for students to illustrate three different ways minerals are used in everyday life. Also included is an alternate version using a half page to save paper.
*Comparing Rocks and Minerals Venn Diagram Flip Flap Book-A Venn Diagram comparing rocks and minerals. Students cut and paste statements and decide if they describe rocks, minerals, or both and glue under the correct flap.
*Physical Attributes Sort-Students sort a variety of mineral samples on sorting mats for luster, size, and color. A simple lab book for recording work is also included. Please note this activity will need additional materials such as mineral samples, a balance, tape measure, and hand lenses for students.
*Simple Tests for Minerals-Short, simple, half sheet lab experiments testing mineral hardness and streak. After students complete the mineral hardness test, they can complete the Mohs Scale cut and paste activity. Please note these activities will need additional materials such as mineral samples, streak plates, pennies, and hand lenses for students.
*Comparing Two Samples of Rocks or Minerals-Students complete a rock shaped foldable comparing two samples of rocks or minerals, similar to a Venn diagram.
*3 Types of Rocks Flipbook and Graphic Organizer-Three flap book labeled igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock. Students cut and paste the definition of each rock and examples (such as granite, sandstone, etc.) under each flap. A Triple Venn diagram comparing the three types of rocks is also included. Please note that students will need an additional text to complete the triple Venn Diagram.
*Rock Cycle Circle Book-Students cut out a circle of the rock cycle and then color and glue in how rocks transform from one kind of rock to another.
