The overarching goal of this lesson is to teach students about types of rocks and minerals. This fits into the ‘bigger picture’ because there are so many types of rocks in the natural world, many of which are used for certain things. Students need to understand why rocks and minerals are important. It includes a Rocks and Minerals LAB, where students observe different rocks/minerals and write down their findings in a chart.
Objectives: As a result of this lesson:
Students will be able to identify the three basic rock types: metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary.
Students will be able to explain the different properties of minerals and how they form. Students will be able to compare and contrast different rocks and minerals and how they are formed.
Students will be able to determine the name of unknown minerals based on their physical characteristics using several resources to help them.
