This is a fantastic “PERFORMANCE LAB” designed for multiple ability and academic levels.
This lab is GOLD for the brain.
Teachers are also able to use their professional discretion as to what information is given and what is not. There are a number of options available with this lab in that students can either collect their own density data or use the provided data, or BOTH.
This is a math and science fusion incorporating the scientific method, mass, volume, and density. This works well for any level but is GREAT for special education students or college prep learners that need an alternative assessment and may not be great at traditional labs/activities/assessments.
Density is calculated for 4 mineral samples: galena, calcite, corundum, and gypsum. The lab procedure is in picture format making it fun and inviting! This is a FAIL PROOF lab. The concept of density and the mathematical process of mass divided by volume is hit hard so students finish the activity with these key ideas proficient for possible future state assessments in both science and math whether it be for grade 4 or grade 8.
An underrated feature of this lab is that it also includes how to calculate volume by displacement using both final and initial volume when dropping an irregular object into a graduated cylinder.
After data collection, students assemble bar graphs in which they compare and contrast their data. They can do so with the provided data or their self calculated data.
Numerous conclusion questions are also provided. This lab is tremendous fun for both students and teachers. It is a hit across both the math and science department.
All in all, this has been used as a pre-class, lab/activity, study guide, review, and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
A guaranteed hit all around!
A great addition to your geology and math teaching library.
Cut and paste or Velcro and laminate for special education applications and alternative assessments.
Within the classroom, this activity has been consistently very successful and acclaimed by students in grades 5th – 9th within multiple types of schools - public, private, and charter.
This work has also been shared at workshops, in-services, and conferences.
Great feedback from parents, teachers, administrators, and curriculum field professionals.
Applicable to many state science assessments and benchmarks.
Has been applied to state mandated North Carolina end of year tests for science in grades 5 and 8.
Even used by teachers in New York State as a preparation for the Earth Science Grade 9 Regents Exam.
