Rocks and Minerals PowerPoints Grade 6
I made these PowerPoints to aid in a Grade 6 science unit on Rocks and Minerals. They are great tools to introduce the topic, or to review, and include a lot of great images! (The What is a Mineral PowerPoint is available as the preview.)
This product includes Four PowerPoint Presentations
1. Journey to the Center of the Earth (15 slides): This goes over the different layers of the earth.
2. What is a Rock? (70 slides): Topics included are the three rock families:
Sedimentary Rock: Weathering (ice wedging, pressure release, exfoliation, plant root growth, abrasion, wind-ice-wave-water erosion), how sediments harden, the layers, types of sedimentary rock (sandstone, conglomerate, shale, limestone, coquina).
Igneous Rock: Intrusive rock (granite, gabbro), extrusive (basalt, obsidian, scoria, rhyolite, pumice, schist)
Metamorphic Rock: How they form (pressure), types of rock (gneiss, quartzite, marble, slate), and characteristics
3. What is a Mineral? (29 slides): Topics included are the definition of a mineral, the properties of a mineral (color, streak, hardness-Mohs scale, luster and types of luster, cleavage/fracture), gemstones, and geodes.
4. Rock Review (35 slides): A review of rocks that I would use before the assessment. Topics included are the three different families and how they are formed, their characteristics, the rock cycle, and parent rocks.
