During my many years of teaching third grade and the unit on rocks and minerals, the “Flintstones” theme song kept popping into my head. I began thinking of some new lyrics for the song, but the idea never fully came to fruition, until…
I now teach sixth grade science in a small private, Christian school. Once again, I had to teach a unit on rocks and minerals. This time, I really began working hard to finish what I had started years ago. This is the final result! The “meat” of the lyrics comes from our textbook which is published by A Beka Books, a Christian textbook company; however, this song can be used in any classroom (probably 3rd – 7th) in public or private school.
This song and its lyrics contain the three types of rocks, how they are formed, and examples of each type of rock.
• In the first verse, the lyrics say, “From the time of creation”. Even if you do not accept the Biblical account of creation, all rocks were created somehow, right? I really don’t see a problem there! If you do, please feel free to change the lyrics there.
• Practice several times with these lyrics! Find a audio version of the “Flintstones” theme song online and work on cramming some of the words into the music. It can be done!
• Have fun with this! My sixth graders, especially the girls, LOVED this and begged to sing it over and over. The student copy is on the following page.
