These “Quick Picks” are my classroom’s fast finisher. Since my theme is Rock N’Roll, I painted a large electric guitar to hang on my wall and then used Velcro to attach these “Quick Picks” (10 variations) on the guitar. One of the classroom routines is If you finish early, silently and immediately get a Quick Pick and get to work. This eliminates a lot of goofing off and luring other students into getting off task. My students know to go straight to work again.
The best part of these “Quick Picks” is that they involve Choice. Each pick has four options ranging from literacy work to math work to art work to classroom service. The student chooses what they’re in the mood for, which increases their motivation, and they engage in something they think is more fun because they chose it. This means choosing a Quick Pick isn’t something to avoid.
