Using the documentary series Rococo Before Bedtime (Episode 1 and 4), this activity introduces students to what the Baroque and Rococo were with rich visuals and commentary by Waldemar Januszczak. It includes reflection questions that allow them to consider the arts connection to religion and monarchy, as well as how Neoclassical Art differs from those two art movements.
The episodes or series as a whole can be purchased inexpensively - less than $10 on Amazon Prime.
My students have loved this documentary each year and enthusiastically support the idea of keeping it in the class plans. They find the narrator very entertaining, and goofy because of his deep passion for the art – yet relate to the way he ponders and describes the art in very accurate, yet unique and meaningful ways.
