Compared by police to Ted Bundy, Rodney Alcala is a convicted rapist and serial killer. Alcala was arrested on July 27, 1979 and has been in prison ever since. He was retried when his convictions were overturned but never released. He was finally convicted again and sentenced to death in California in 2010 for five murders committed in that state between 1977 and 1979. His California victims officially are 5. His New York victims officially are 2. Yet it is believed he could be responsible for 100 or more other murders nationwide.
In 1978, Rodney Alcala was accepted as a contestant on The Dating Game. This occurred despite his being a convicted rapist and a registered sex offender. Incredibly, The Dating Game did not do even the most basic of background checks on its contestants. Show Host Jim Lange blithely introduced Alcala as "...a successful photographer who got his start when his father found him in the darkroom at the age of 13, fully developed. Between takes you might find him skydiving or motorcycling.”
This “dream date” had served 34 months in prison for the rape and beating of an 8-year-old girl. He’d been on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. He was now in the midst of a serial killing rampage, having already killed at least two women.
His clever, suggestive comments were a big hit and Cheryl Bradshaw picked him over the other two bachelors.
