To become familiar with the responsibilities of each branch of the U.S. armed services during both times of war and peace.
1 class period
Students begin this lesson by reading and learning about the various branches of the United States military:
• Air Force
• Marine Corps
• Coast Guard
As they are reading, have the kids underline or highlight key words, names, terms, and ideas.
Afterwards, it is time to play JEOPARDY! The class is divided into two teams to compete against each other. A large drawing of the gameboard can be put on the the board. Or, if you have a whiteboard, you can use it to display the JEOPARDY gameboard provided on page 105D. Categories are ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINE CORPS, and COAST GUARD. Questions asked during the game are based on facts given on the preceding pages. Complete game rules are provided on the lesson pages.
I use several JEOPARDY games during the school year to help students learn. Each time my students have walked into class and seen JEOPARDY categories on the board, they get excited. The competition in these games makes social studies class a lot of fun!
After the game has been played, you can give each student a copy of page 105E to do as a quiz or review exercise.
Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included.
