In this CCSS based unit, students read two stories by female authors from the late nineteenth century. The entire unit works towards this project: The protagonists in Edith Wharton's "April Showers" and in Charlotte Perkins' "The Story of an Hour" are women who face the realities of their roles in society during this time period. Students read the stories, conduct research, and create multi-media/multi-genre presentations that show their finding and explore the theme of women in society during this time.
This unit goes along with the CCSS American Literature Unit 4--A Troubled Young Nation. The Unit included vocabulary, reading guides, step-by-step instruction, objectives, a powerpoint, student handouts, rubrics, etc. In my classroom this unit serves as a pre-unit that will eventually lead into reading "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".
