This place value Smart Notebook resource was created to accompany the Edugains resource "Roll & Risk" from the Ontario Ministry of Education, and is meant to support Grades 2-4 students as they explore place value and probability it an entertaining atmosphere. Students work with a partner to try to roll dice to get as close as possible to a target number without going over. As they do so they must regroup base 10 blocks using a mat, and strengthen their probability skills as they decide when it best to stop rolling the dice rather than risk going over their target number.
This activity provides students with the opportunity to practice the game in two versions: the first involves 2 digit numbers, while the second version involves 3 digits. A link to the Edugains website where the full lesson summary, teacher resource videos, and recording sheets may be found.
While these games were orginally developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education for Grades 2 and 3 students, they work fine to review regrouping with Grade 4 students as well!
