Kids love telling and writing fiction stories! For struggling writers though, the greatest challenge can often be choosing a topic and planning out a story. This activity will get even the most reluctant writers excited about story telling!
Just add dice and you've got an Oral Story-telling Game, Small Group Writing Activity, and Independent Writing Center ALL IN ONE!
1. Oral Story-telling: Students take turns rolling a die 4 times and telling a story using all of the story elements! EXAMPLE: "A little boy and his dog lived in a castle. They were sad because they had never left the castle. One day..."
2. Small Group Story Building: First student rolls a die to begin the story with the main character, the second student rolls and continues the story, adding the supporting character, additional students add to the story after each roll -- can be done orally or in writing. EXAMPLE: (1) "There once was a purple dragon." (2) "The dragon's only friend was a little girl." (3) "The purple dragon and the little girl went on a vacation on a beach." (4) "When they got there they were surprised because..."
3: Independent Fiction Writing: Students rolls a die 4 times and writes a story that incorporates each story element. Paper Included!
