The activities in this set are designed to provide practice with decoding and recognizing real and nonsense words with medial vowel digraphs. The activity is appropriate for centers, independent work, small group work, intervention/extension work, and take-home work.
Students roll the color-coded dice and sequence the word parts by color to form a “word”. (Student direction sheet included.) Students write their words and indicate if each word is real or nonsense. (Recording sheet and word cards included.)
Students write their real words on word cards. (Card sheet included.) They sort the words and challenge a partner to guess the sorting rule – beginning sound, ending sound, long vowel sound, short vowel sound, long “e”, long “a”, long “o”, short “o”…
ROLL-A-WORD RHYME MATCHING
Students determine which of their word cards are rhyming words and record pairs on rhyme cards. (Cards included.)
Students make additional words using the letters on the game dice and add to a class list.
Challenge students to identify which of their real words are homophones and make a word card for the correlating homophones. (examples: hear/here, bear/bare, feet/feat, meet/meat) (Cards included.)
