This game provides practice for students adding and subtracting within 20. Students use ten sided die to add or subtract numbers greater than and equal to 10. This game is for first grade students but is also helpful for second graders who may need some scaffolding and intervention. This game is highly motivating and requires some strategy and understanding of place value. Kindergarten students may also enjoy this game as an enrichment activity.
Materials for pairs or small groups
2 ten-sided dice
Markers to cover numbers: Bingo markers, color counters, beans, or small chips
Game boards: One per student (print multiple copies of the same board for groups larger than 6)
Student rolls both die. Student may choose to add or subtract the numbers on their die. Student covers the number that is made by adding or subtracting the numbers.
Students take turns. If no number is available on the gameboard, the student must wait for their next turn to roll again.
The student who covers their entire board wins the game.
There is also a game board which has the numbers in order from 1-20 for students who need a little additional scaffolding.
There are 6 gameboards. This game is intended for small groups. If you intend to play with your entire class at the same time, simply print 2 or 3 of each gameboard.
