Roll and Cover or BUMP - A Number Sense Game (with Balloons and Monsters)

Monster Balloon Pop is a Math game that can be played two ways. Firstly you can play it as a roll and cover game. The students throw 2 dice and cover the corresponding number on the board. The first student to cover all their numbers wins. Then there are the more powerful ways to play where you substitute specialized playing card decks for the dice.

Deck 1 - Numbers 1-12 as numbers
Deck 2 - Numbers 1-12 as words.
Deck 3 - Numbers 1-12 as matchstick tallies.
Deck 4 - Numbers 1-12 as 10 Frames
Deck 5 - Numbers 1-12 in subitized form.

The Roll and Cover Game:

What You Need:

2 Players
2 Dice or a Set of Cards
1 Game Board For each player
12 Counters for each player

Preparation:

- If using the cards, create a deck of the skills you want the students to practice e.g. The Tally Deck, the Subitized Deck and the 10 Frame Deck.
- Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a deck in the centre of the playing area.

How to Play:

1.Player One rolls the dice adds the numbers or turns over a card and works out the number represented.
2.Player One then covers the corresponding number on their board.
3.Player Two then repeats Steps 1 & 2.
4.Play continues in this turn-a-bout fashion until one player covers all the numbers one their board.

How to Win:

First player to cover all their numbers wins the game.

Another Way to Play - Bump

Two students share one board and have 6 counters each. They can play the game with 2 dice or use the card decks. They take turns at producing a number by either rolling the dice or flipping over a card from the top of the deck. They then place a counter on the answer. First player to use all their counters wins.

What You Need:

2 Players
2 dice numbered 1 to 6 or a Card Deck
1 Game Board
6 Counters of different colors per Player

How to Play:

1. Add up how many letters you have in your first and last names.
The student with the least letters goes first.
2. Player One throws the 2 dice or flips over a card from the top of the pile.
3. Player One adds the numbers thrown or works out the number represented on the card and places one of their counters on that number on the board.
4. Player Two repeats steps 2 through 4.

The 'Bump' Rule

- If a number is already covered by a single opposition counter a player can 'BUMP' the counter off the board and replace it with their own.

The 'Locked In' Rule

- If a number is covered is covered by your piece and you throw that number, A player can place a second counter on top of the one already on the board. This means the piece is 'LOCKED IN' and it cannot be 'BUMPED' off the board.

5. Play continues in this turnabout fashion of throwing 2 dice on one turn and one die on the next.

How to Win:

The first player to use up all their counters wins the game.
