"Roll and Retell" isn't just for elementary! Students enjoy adding some "chance" the their reading responses. Simply add dice, and responding to reading becomes a game :)
Use this activity with any literature text that students have read - as an entire class, in small groups, or independently.
In this product, you will find the following:
1) Roll and Retell Worksheet (use for on-level students who are working to master the reading skill)
2) Roll and Retell Extension Worksheet (use for accelerated students to extend their thinking)
3) Full page recording page
4) Three-Question recording page (use if you would like students to roll three responses. These responses will be longer, and only choosing three adds some extra “chance”)
5) Half-page recording sheets (use these to save paper!)
There are many ways to use this product. Here are a few suggestions:
*You may choose to have students answer all six questions, or decide on a certain number of questions ahead of time.
*Both can be turned into a “game”. Students enjoy rolling the die a few times to try and get to all of the numbers. Students also enjoy the choice and freedom involved in choosing their own questions…or rather, having the die choose them!
Project the “Roll and Retell” sheet for the entire class to see
Have either the teacher, or a student, roll a die. Students will answer the question that corresponds to the number on the die.
Have students share answers as a whole group, with a partner, or individually. Students may use the recording pages provided or simply a piece of lined paper.
Partner or Small Group Practice *great as a center/station during workshop time!
Give each pair/group a “Roll and Retell” sheet.
Have students take turns rolling the die and answering the questions
Students can respond as a pair on one recording sheet, or each use an individual recording sheet.
Individual Practice *can be used as a “early finisher” option
Either project the “Roll and Retell” sheet, or give each student a copy.
Students answer the questions individually on their recording sheets.
Meet with small groups of students to work on reading skills needed
If the rest of the class has mastered the skill, they may work on the “extension” questions.
