This reading comprehension test is a free sample which covers the first three chapters of Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. It was were written for use in regular, inclusion, and special education sixth or seventh grade classrooms. In addition to the tests, this introductory offer includes a character study guide for students, several modified sections and an answer key for teachers. This test has 54 questions plus an essay question.
The word modified does not appear on the test and must be sorted out by the teacher. You will know it is the modified section because it is a duplicate and it is broken down into smaller sections. All modified questions are in the sequencing, quotes, and character identification portion of the tests and are on separate pages.
Each test is made up of multiple choice; sequencing; true/false questions; character identification— matching; and identifying quotes— fill in the blank. The test is easy to correct and provides an accurate tool to check student’s understanding of the material.
In keeping with the Common Core Standards, page numbers from the book are provided for each question giving the teacher the choice to encourage students to use the text to find their answers. The questions are designed to test: recognizing cause and effect; recalling facts and details; comparing and contrasting; understanding sequence; making predictions; finding word meaning in context; identifying author’s purpose; drawing conclusions and making inferences; interpreting figurative language; and understanding metaphors and similes.
Experience proves that the more competent students successfully answer many of the questions using recall, while less competent students rely heavily on using the provided page numbers and the text, making these tests useful tools to help the overall student population become more confident readers.
