This is one of my favorite ways to do new vocabulary with students. The vocab words are pulled from Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Before I show the PowerPoint with the meaning of each word, I ask students to try to figure out the meaning of the words from heavily contextualized sentences. This helps students practice the skill of making educated guesses about new words they encounter when reading. The PDF of the vocab handouts can be printed double-sided so that each handout has the context sentences as well as an accompanying place to copy down the correct meanings of the words. The PowerPoint included can be displayed for discussion and for students to copy down. I have also included a quiz for each group of words. The quizzes include matching, as well as a place for students to use the words in their own sentences.
