Here are two dice rolling activities for your classroom when working with summarizing or retelling fiction or prewriting narratives.
I use this about four times a year to help students with the prewriting part of narrative writing and for story retelling when working on elements of plot. We start off with the story retelling in the first few weeks to review elements of plot. These basic elements help students to understand summaries are retellings of the story, not rewriting of it. We then use it when we are planning our own narrative stories. We write a narrative at the beginning of the year, then we hit it again as we write our hero graphic novels. Sometimes I use this with literature circles to have the students discuss what is going on in their novels and check their comprehension of the basic plot elements.
I also think this is an easy, engaging sub if you leave a short story with it!
