This is an excellent project to use when teaching a unit on Energy. Students must use the Law of Conservation of Energy to design a roller coaster with an energy limit. Students must focus on the engineering aspect of this project, as well a the physics principles.
I have used this for 6 semesters with really good results! Students really enjoy the creative aspect of this project and take ownership in their work. I teach 45 minute classes and usually give students 4 days to complete the project and 1 day for a gallery walk to score and display their work.
Included in the packet is the instructions for students, calculations page, follow up questions, rubric, and peer scoring pages.
