I designed this FUN science project to accompany the Georgia 4th grade science standard:
S4P3. Students will demonstrate the relationship between the application of a force and the resulting change in position and motion on an object.
b. Using different size objects, observe how force affects speed and motion.
c. Explain what happens to the speed or direction of an object when a greater force than the initial one is applied.
d. Demonstrate the effect of gravitational force on the motion of an object.
Due to the nature of the project and rubrics, it can be used with multiple grade levels.
Students will use many “habits of the mind” standards to create a roller coaster. First they must draw their roller coaster. Then, in a group, they will construct their roller coaster. Finally, they must write a persuasive essay to scientists at a theme park to persuade them to choose the student’s roller coaster to be added to their park.
Kids love this project because it’s a VERY hands on way to learn about force and motion. Teachers love this project because all the work has been done for you- even rubrics for grading!
