What’s Included:
There are 35 work-mats included in this set! 7 pages EACH are devoted to short a, e, i, o, and u, respectively. ALL 35 pages contain 28 short vowel rimes with a line in front of each on which a missing blend/digraph onset is to be written (i.e., ___ap, ___ess, ___ill, ___ock, ___ug). In each 7-page short vowel mini-set, there are: 2 pages focused on “r consonant” blends (i.e., /tr/, /fr/, /cr/, /spr/); 2 pages focused on “l consonant” blends (i.e., /gl/, /pl/, /bl/, /spl/); 2 pages focused on the “leftover consonant” blends (i.e., /tw/, /sn/, /sw/, /sm/); and 1 page focused on the most common digraphs (i.e., /sh/, /ch/, /th/, /qu/).

Set Up:
These pages can be used for worksheet purposes OR as a center activity. If using for worksheet purposes, simply print and pass out! If using as a center activity, I suggest printing all pages on white cardstock or construction paper. Pages can be printed in black and white (if color printing is NOT a feasible option) without losing any readability. Then, either laminate all pages OR place them in page protectors. Gather some dice and dry-erase markers and you are ready to let the games begin!

How to Use:
These work-mats are SO simple - yet quite exciting - to use! My kindergarten students select a mat, roll a die, write the consonant blend or digraph rolled on the line, then read the word! For instance, if a 6 is rolled, the child matches the number to the “KEY,” writes the consonant blend on the line (in this case, “tr”), and reads the word created: “trap.” Since “trap” is a real word, it is circled. If a word made isn’t a real word (i.e., “drap”), it is NOT circled. This process is repeated until all word blanks have been filled. Finally, the student counts the number of circled real words and writes the number in the designated box at the top of the page.

With so many work-mats included in this set, your students are in for HOURS of word-decoding fun! My kids love anything with dice. I know yours will, too. ☺
