Product Description
Following the American Literature timeline, the Romantic Period covers the period from 1800 - 1870. This unit includes an introduction to romanticism and elements of romantic literature, but the focus of this particular unit is the Fireside Poets and the Transcendentalists, Emerson and Thoreau. Poets include Longfellow, Lowell, Holmes, Whittier, and Bryant. This flipped bundle includes all of the reading, worksheets, assessments, and videos you will need for a 2-3 week teaching unit.
Students are asked to participate in a group project where they research one of the poets and explicate a poem or poems, depending on the poet. They are then required to create a lesson that they present to the class. The lesson must include a worksheet of some type and a quiz (most of my students did this online through Quizlet, Nearpod, Kahoot, etc.) I found those presentations to be much more engaging, so that is what I would likely require in the future. I asked students to take notes on the presentations and then I gave them the Romantics Study guide, which we went over, tailoring some answers to the test itself. This bundle includes the test in both pdf and word format.
I modelled a lesson for "Thanatopsis," which is included in this lesson so the kids had something to reference while making their own video lessons for their projects.
The second part of the test covers the Transcendentalists, Emerson and Thoreau. I have included a worksheet for Emerson, which I helped them with in class. I am constantly teaching annotation techniques, SOAPSTone, and DIDLS, which, if you have purchased products from my store, are scaffolded skills within each of my units. The test for this unit covers SOAPSTone and DIDLS for the Thoreau reading. I went over it in class, but I expected this part of the test to really be a skills-based assessment.
