This fun and engaging magazine-style personality quiz helps students determine whether they are a Romantic, a Rationalist, or somewhere in-between.
The questions are designed to introduce students to some of the major tenets of British Romanticism, including a love of and respect for the natural world, belief in the innocence of children, dislike of industrialization, support for artistic experimentation, and spirit of individuality.
This quiz would work well as an introductory activity to a number of units/texts, including Romantic novels like Frankenstein, Waverley, Ivanhoe, Dracula, or the Hunchback of Notre-Dame, or Romantic poetry by Wordsworth, Blake, Keats, Shelley, Coleridge, or Byron. It could even be used in a History class as an introduction to the French Revolution.
For added rigor, have students reflect in discussion and/or writing afterward.
