EXCERPT 1: OVERVIEW BULLET POINTS

-began in Europe toward the end of the 18th century
-in part a reaction against the Industrial Revolution
-at its peak from 1800 to 1850
-emotion and individualism were the ideals
-the past and nature were glorified
-medieval was preferred to the classical.
-big impact on the visual arts, music, and literature,
-associated with liberalism and radicalism
-eventually aided the growth of nationalism (Fascists)
-alternatively called the Romantic era or the Romantic period.
-intense emotion became an authentic source of aesthetic experience
-apprehension, horror, terror, and awe were such intense emotions.
-folk art and ancient custom recognized
-revived medievalism
-lauded heroic individualists
-individual imagination encouraged
-Realism considered its polar opposite.
-Philosopher Isaiah Berlin summed up Romanticism, “embodied a new and restless spirit, seeking violently to burst through old and cramping forms, a nervous preoccupation with perpetually changing inner states of consciousness, a longing for the unbounded and the indefinable, for perpetual movement and change, an effort to return to the forgotten sources of life, a passionate effort at self-assertion both individual and collective, a search after means of expressing an unappeasable yearning for unattainable goals."

EXCERPT 2: ROMANCE DEFINED. TIME PERIODS

-the way we define romance or romantic in the 21st century is different from the way it was defined in the 1700-1800s.
-definition back then: “marked by the imaginative or emotional appeal of what is heroic, adventurous, remote, mysterious, or idealized.”
-defined in 20th and 21st centuries: “of, relating to, or involving love between two people.”
-back then if a romance artist or writer was mentioned, that meant: “a writer, musician, or artist whose work stresses emotion and imagination.”
-today a romance artist or writer means someone who writes love stories about two people or paints about that love.
-this art movement will only make sense to the student if the correct definition for the time period is kept in mind.

EXCERPT 3: ARTIST PROFILE (THERE IS ONE FOR EVERY ARTIST)

-Caspar David Friedrich
-1774 – 1840 (age 66)
-German Romantic landscape painter
-allegorical landscapes with contemplative figures
-figures often in silhouette against evocative scenes of nature
-figures were in diminished perspective as they confronted natural world
-art historian Christopher John Murray: “Friedrich directs the viewer's gaze towards their metaphysical dimension.”
-during artist’s time, across Europe, spirituality gained ascendance over materialistic interests
-Friedrich went in and out of favor artistically. He was obscure by the time he died.
-In the 1970s Friedrich’s art gained a new appreciation. Since then he has been considered the leading figure of German Romantic painting.
-"Close your bodily eye, so that you may see your picture first with your spiritual eye; then bring to the light of day that which you have seen in darkness, so that it may react on others from the outside inwards." Friedrich
