THIS CURRICULUM UNIT NOW INCLUDES ALL DETAILED LESSON PLANS WITH AN ORGANIZED DAY TO DAY LIST FOR EASY USE OF LESSONS AND NO PREP!
Everyone loves a scary story and who better to tell one than Edgar Allan Poe! This two week curriculum unit explores Romanticism and Transcendentalism.
Students will read Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry such as “The Raven,” Washington Irving’s “The Devil and Tom Walker,” Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Dr. Heidegger,” and finally, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s complex “Self-Reliance.”
Students will view an 11 slide Power Point to enable them to understand what caused the shift in ideas from the Age of Reason to Romanticism.
Students will be introduced to Edgar Allan Poe and will understand how his literary accomplishments have influenced pop music today.
Students will also be able to compare Poe’s poetry to music artists Michael Jackson and Kelly Clarkson. The YouTube urls have been provided so students can view both songs-“Thriller” and “Because of You.”
There is a final project included in which students will be divided into groups to create a PowerPoint on Poe and a modern song of today. I always enjoy student presentations!
In all, there are five Power Points, eight handouts, a quiz, and one unit test. Each PowerPoint includes a lesson that will cover an author and includes an activity.
