Product Description

This editable 8-question close reading and annotating resource helps students derive deeper meaning from William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. This exercise covers Friar Laurence's opening soliloquy in Act 2, Scene 3. By engaging in this exercise, students will read to apply literary devices, develop their vocabulary, and identify what the text says explicitly and implicitly. They will also demonstrate a greater understanding of Friar Laurence's philosophy. An answer key with sample annotations is included. More specifically, this resource covers the following:

  • Discerning meaning from what the text explicitly states: "I must upfill this osier cage of ours / With baleful weeds and precious-juiced flowers."
  • Interpreting metaphorical expressions: "The earth that’s nature’s mother in her tomb, / What is her burying grave, that is her womb."
  • Discerning meaning from what the text explicitly states: "O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies / In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities; / For naught so vile on the earth doth live / But to the earth some special good doth give..."
  • Discerning meaning from what the text explicitly states: "Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied."
  • Understanding and applying literary devices (foreshadowing): "Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied.."
  • Discerning meaning from what the text explicitly states: "And vice sometime by action dignified."
  • Discerning meaning from what the text explicitly states: "Within the infant rind of this small flower / Poison hath residence, and medicine power; / For this, being smelt, with that part cheers each part; / Being tasted, slays all senses with the heart."
  • Discerning meaning from what the text explicitly states: "And where the worser is predominant, / Full soon the canker death eats up that plant."

This resource aligns well to Adolescent Literacy Project teaching principles. I recommend using these worksheets as the basis for small-group discussions, letting students discuss, debate, and support their reasoning for answer choices. In the role of facilitator, I observe my students becoming more consistently engaged with the novel and taking greater ownership of their learning.

In addition to helping students gain deeper understanding of the material and greater confidence in their ability to read complex texts, this resource was designed to prepare students for ACT-style questioning.
