Romeo & Juliet are two of the most iconic characters in the canon, and students can get discouraged when they are tasked with reading Shakespeare. This assessment turns each of your students into a psychologist who has to determine if Romeo or Juliet (depending on the character they chose) is mentally stable or not. They do this by creating documents from outside sources, interview the character directly, interview people that the characters interact with (What would Tybalt say about Romeo? What would the Nurse say about Juliet?), and behavioral observations that must be supported by quotes from the text.
I assigned this at the beginning of the unit for Romeo and Juliet and have let the students read through the play with the mindset of evaluating each character to determine if they are reliable enough to give an interview about their colleague or not. The download is in a Word Document so that you can change the assessment as you see fit.
