Response to literature essay prompt is:
 Discuss how Romeo is irresponsible based on the choices he makes in the play. {you may choose Juliet instead}. Choose TWO decisions and discuss how the decisions make him/her irresponsible.

Page 1: Prompt, brainstorm, thesis chart & thesis statement
*Thesis chart and thesis statement are partially completed for the student.

Page 2: Choices Chart
*Students have chosen their character and TWO choices to focus on. Now they go deeper by:
What is the Situation? What is the Decision or Choice? What is the Result of the Decision? How is this Decision Irresponsible? What Could Be an Alternate Decision?

Page 3: Evidence Gathering
*Gather evidence/quotes to support the choice made and then the result. They also identify character traits shown and what a better choice would have been.

Page 4-6: Intro, 2 Body Paragraphs and Conclusion Skeleton Outline.
*Intro is taught with HIT (Hook, Impt Info & Thesis), Body Paragraphs are chunks of Concrete Detail (quote), commentary and commentary. Transitions are already there to lead the students in their though process.

Conclusion is taught with 3 sections where they answer the following questions:
1. What? Restate your thesis in 2-3 sentences.
2. So What? Explain WHY your topic is important to know/understand.
3. Now What? What does one do with this information that you’ve talked about?

With this packet you can take a student from beginning to end of an essay with scaffolding all along the way. Students have gained much confidence in their writing by using this formula. It sets a great foundation for writing for the years to come.
