In this unit readers will analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. They will also analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment. Writers will apply grade 9 reading standards, drawing evidence from literary texts to craft arguments by introducing precise claim(s), developing claim(s) and counterclaims fairly, and supplying evidence for each while pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the audience's knowledge level and concerns. This unit contains vocabulary, pre-reading activities, reading guides and activities for each act and scene, writing activities, a literary analysis lesson, and a thematic seminar activity. Keys are included for all assignments (when applicable).
