Anyone can write a simple recall reading assessment. And these assessments simply let you know who read. They do not let you know how well the students can read critically and think critically. This assessment for act 1 of Romeo and Juliet does check for critical reading and thinking, and therefore it can be used as a high quality reading check for honors level students or an assessment that can work as a teaching tool, especially for lower level readers.
It contains questions throughout act one. The 20 questions are engaging. The questions themselves are often informative. Most contain lines from the play that students must decipher and make sophisticated connections. The document contains seven questions on the famous kissing scene in which Romeo and Juliet trade sets of lines which add up to fourteen and contain an English sonnet rhyme scheme. Yup, they utter an impromptu sonnet together before kissing--that's love.
