52 word puzzle. This is a fun method of ensuring that students are familiar with difficult, archaic, unusual, or key words from Act 3 of the play by William Shakespeare.
Words in the puzzle are.. affliction, ally, amerce, apt, bandying, banished, beguiled, bier, blaze, brawl, cell, citizen, consort, dexterity, disguise, doom, doublet, effeminate, exile, fain, fickle, fray, friar, fury, gallant, jocund, justice, lamentation, livery, mercy, minstrel, plague, purgatory, quarrel, rapier, reputation, slain, slander, stealth, steed, strife, sullen, tavern, tomb, torment, truce, untimely, usurer, valour, vile, villain, and wit.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, it is an active learning activity. It helps students with spelling and comprehension of new words.
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging. In this case, I would use as an open book assignment and as pair work.
