The daily edits address comma errors, capitalization, and run on sentences. I use it as a Do Now as they walk in the door to get them warmed up before we proceed to reading or other activities of the unit on Romeo and Juliet. It serves as both a content review as well as a lesson on editing.
I will usually allow the students a limited amount of time to make editing marks on the page and then go over the reasoning of the editing marks for them. I quote the rules of grammar for them so they can see the real reason for the comma and period. As we repeat this daily in the classroom, the students will usually ask to lead and will often ask the questions themselves to the peers.
