This is a perfect project for a drama, stagecraft, or even an English class. For this project, students were tasked with designing costumes for 6 of the primary characters in the play (including Romeo, Juliet, Mercurio, and Tybalt).
The students had to create colored costume renderings for each of the 6 characters and include a 2 page written justification for their design concept. Students were encouraged to think outside of the box and were not allowed to set the play during it's traditional, Italian renaissance locale. For drama or stagecraft students, there is also an added element that requires students to create costume plots and dressing lists for these 6 characters. However, this could be excluded for English classes.
The written justification in this project could be expanded to include reflection on theme and character development for an ELA class.
