Are you searching for a unique way to teach the rich figurative language and literary devices in Romeo and Juliet?

Make your instruction more memorable with this creative, high-interest "Romeo and Juliet" Literary Elements project!

Students will illustrate essential literary elements in Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet" using the free, user-friendly Adobe Spark website!

Adobe Spark has a browser-based version that can be used with any wifi-enabled device with access to Google Chrome! Students can also use the free iOs app to create this online poster project!

For this project, students will create three beautiful, dynamic online digital posters featuring literary elements from "Romeo and Juliet."

A list of the most commonly used literary elements and literary devices is included. Teachers can implement this project with a specific list of literary devices or types of figurative language or allow students to choose!

What is a Literary Elements Poster?

Literary Elements Posters can display a literary element (or device) and its meaning in a variety of ways using images, icons, graphics, color, text, quotes, etc.

Students will select from the following options to feature on their digital posters:

The Name of the Literary Device or Literary Element
Definition of the Literary Device or Element
The Writer’s Purpose
The Reader Impact
A Reference or Quote from “Romeo and Juliet” featuring the figurative language, figure of speech, or literary device

Students will be able to view three project examples of “Romeo and Juliet” Literary Elements Posters created with the Adobe Spark website featuring the following literary devices: Foreshadowing, Puns, Oxymoron and Paradox

These three dynamic examples are included to serve as an inspiration and model!
Along with creating posters, students are also required to turn in a “Romeo and Juliet” Project Checklist.

This checklist holds students accountable by requiring that they explain their poster content, list specific references or quotes from “Romeo and Juliet” featuring the literary device, explain the meaning of the play references, and paste their project’s website address.

This activity also includes the following:

A pdf teacher’s guide with Google Drive links to all student and teacher resources;
Access and share directions for Google Drive, Google Classroom, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Office, and handouts that can also be printed;
Student’s Project Sheet with clear directions and suggestions for poster content – including poster requirements and additional ideas;
Directions for signing up for an account at Adobe Spark, a How-To Guide, and a link to a YouTube video on creating posters using Adobe Spark;
Links to 3 sample “Romeo and Juliet” literary posters featuring the following literary devices– foreshadowing, puns, oxymoron and paradox;
A Topic List Of Literary Elements in “Romeo and Juliet”;
A Final Student Project Checklist that outlines the same grading requirements as the grading rubric;
A Sample Literary Element Poster Student Checklist with model responses and explanations;
An editable Literary Elements Posters Grading Rubric.

Students can share their project’s URL on their Project Checklist handout or teachers may opt for students to create letter-sized posters for printing. The creative and expressive appearance of your students’ posters would also provide a beautiful background for a class word wall!

Allow students the opportunity to express their ability to think critically AND to be creative by designing visuals and graphics to represent the meaning of literary elements from William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet!”
