Were R&J in love or just infatuated? See what your students decide.

Page 3&4: Will be a front and back sheet that explains the paper, has an outline, and shows them how to correctly punctuate quotations from a drama. Also has an example body paragraph. The body paragraph is written from the topic “Is Juliet’s dad a good father?” If I do one with the love.infatuation topic, they tend to plagiarize.
Page 5&6: Love/Infatuation quotations. The quotations are the same, but students take their own stance on interpretation. One of the quotations is five lines long, which I know changes MLA formatting, but as far as the final exam is concerned, I don’t worry with them changing the formatting for this.

This is part of the final exam in my Freshman English class. Students have written papers all semester, so this does not include a lot of help/reminders. Students are allowed to bring all of this and their Romeo and Juliet journal (which we keep up with as they read that is basically a summary of every scene in a little interactive notebook). I give this to students three or four days before the exam date so I have time to answer any questions. They have to choose quotations that show their topic’s progression throughout the play.
On exam day, they come in with their materials and write until they finish, which usually only takes about 45 minutes. I grade it with the rubric provided.
