This is a literature circle unit based around Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The lesson begins with watching a version of Romeo and Juliet so that the students have a point of reference. Since there are several versions of this play, I don’t give a specific movie for you to watch. Watch whatever version is easiest for you to obtain. I am basing the discussion questions for the movie on the text of the play because all the versions I’ve seen stay pretty close to the original play.
The ending project is for the students to cast, costume, and make a trailer or movie poster for a movie adaptation of their book. I have made a movie poster on Photoshop, but you can tell that I don’t have a technical or artistic background. So to show some better examples I have also included two professional posters. I also have the trailer for the 1996 movie Romeo+Juliet. In this version of the play, they update the play to modern times. I chose this as my example to show the students that the sky is the limit for their costume ideas and if they choose to do a trailer they don’t need to find period clothing!
