This assignment has the student adopt a persona from the play Romeo & Juliet and try to convince the Prince who is truly at fault for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. It is designed to make them analyze their character's personality, their speech, and their persuasive techniques. They have to really know their character in order to act like them and persuade the Prince to punish someone.
This is designed as a speech assignment, but could easily be modified to use it as a persuasive essay. It combines writing with the reading of Romeo and Juliet. This is usually the final major assignment I do in conjunction with the play.
Included in this file is the assignment with outline and a brainstorming sheet they can use to start figuring out how to portray their character. I also usually offer extra credit if they dress up like their character for their speech.
