Tired of your students running to Sparknotes the moment you say "Shakespeare?" Looking for a way to check their understanding of what happened in Romeo and Juliet AND if they understand Shakespeare's language? I developed these quizzes to use in order to test a student's ability to understand Shakespeare's language itself, not just act summaries. Students should be working on the skill of struggling and conquering the challenges that reading Shakespeare brings with it.
Each quiz requires that students perform a close reading of a monologue or passage from each act of Romeo and Juliet. In 10 minutes, they must draw out 5 of the topics discussed within the passage in front of them. Students who have read and understand the act beforehand as well as students who can understand the nuances of the language itself perform well on the quizzes. Students who simply read act summaries or relied on others to interpret the text for them struggle to extract the information in the time allotment.
These quizzes can also provide a springboard for discussion and engagement on key moments in each act of the play. I also have quizzes for Othello in my store.
