I have really enjoyed--over my past ten or so years teaching grades 5 through 7--putting on a Shakespearean play with my class. The kids have shown incredible enthusiasm and it has escalated, over the years, into becoming quite a big production.
The first step, however, has been for me to take time (quite a lot of time!) to rewrite the script to tailor it to the elementary, or middle school, classroom. I have kept as much original script as possible while adding in narrators and paraphrasing where necessary to make the play a little more user-friendly, age-appropriate, and audience-friendly!
Please enjoy and feel free to contact me for advice or if you have questions or requests...
I also have adapted scripts for Twelfth Night, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Taming of the Shrew, if you are interested:
Twelfth Night, for the elementary school classroom
Hamlet, for the elementary or middle school classroom
A Midsummer Night's Dream, for the elementary school classroom
King Lear, for the middle school classroom
The Taming of the Shrew, for the elementary or middle school classroom
